Traditional homestead farming systems, known as ‘homegardens’ are multi-strata agroforestry systems that include small-scale tree-, crop- and animal production in close proximity to the homesteads. They are found in many countries, especially in tropical and subtropical regions (Kumar and Nair 2004) where they are important in the daily lives of people because they provide households’ needs in both rural and urban areas (Kortright and Wakefield 2011).
